Maruti Zen Estilo Review
As promised I am back with my very own review of my new car Maruti Zen Estilo which sports a monoform design..

Estilo means “style” and it surely lives upto the tag that has been added to the new Zen!
With first service just round the corner I have managed to drive 800 Kms in the crowded city of Delhi.Coming to the mileage first of all as it is certainly the most talked about point in the budget level segment cars,Estilo gave me a mileage of 16kmpl with every litre of the gas being spent on the city road and not the highway,so that does a seem a pretty decent average considering the fact that it is still in the run-in period.
The car sports the same engine as the Wagon R which is a 1.1 litre 32X4 hypertech engine.
The specs for the engine are as follows:
- 1061cc
- 64.8ps
- 84Nm,
- 4-cylinder
- 16-valve
- MPFI F10D Petrol
The engine has not been refined much except for the fact that it has been tweaked a bit for responsiveness and fuel economy which certainly have given it a better mileage and better pick up time.Also the engineers have worked on the aerodynamics of this car…
The biggest difference where Zen Estilo scores the most are its interiors which are at par with some of the higher end cars and give you a feel of luxury.
Maruti has increased the interior space by extending the dashboard area of the car over the engine thus leaving little space in the engine compartment but certainly no complaints from me as you spend most of the time inside!
This make the car look a lot more spacey…
The wheelbase is a bit larger than the good old Zen at 2360 mm…
Though the car is bit taller than the old Zen but it is smaller when compared to Wagon R but that certainly doesn’t translate into lower headroom for the driver….
There is a lot of dashboard space as mentioned earlier and the high mounted seats are comfortable enough for a long ride.
Can’t comment on the air-conditioning as I couldn’t urn it on in the chilly weather that Delhi is having over the past one month but according to reports it certainly does its job perfectly.
The EPS(Electronic Power Steering) is good but not excellent and leaves more to be desired.
The gear ratios are pretty good for a car in this segment..I managed to get it upto 40kmph in first gear and 80kmph in the second…The rest is pretty obvious!
So new Zen lives up to the saying “Changes are always meant for the good” and it certainly has all the ingredients to make it a tough competitor to the Wagon R and Santro Xing.
With over 15,000 units sold at the time of writing this post it certainly is on its way to glory that for a long time has been with Santro.
Hence I would give it 8/10.

Thanks Ankur for sharing your experience and joy. Congratulations for the new car and I came across this page as I am researching on buying a new car (Estilo?). Will be glad to know of any glitches you have come across meanwhile.

Well to be frank I have not come across any glitches so far(touch wood :P) and the ride has been pretty smooth..
I would seriously recommend this car to budget level car buyers…

Hi Ankur,
Nice post, in fact i am planning to buy an estilo and mileage is the main criteria. The advertised mileage itself is 13-14, then how did you manage to get 16? If it gives 16, then I am more than happy to buy it :o)
Akshatha kamath
26 Feb 07 at 3:58 am
Well the advertised mileage is a conservative value and if one does follow good practices one can extract good mileage from the car.
You would have also seen in the newspapers Maruti advertising that Swift owners had managed to get 28knpl as average…
So mileage can vary person to parson…
Ankur Gupta
26 Feb 07 at 7:49 am
Yes I agree.Mileage depends on how a person handles the car in traffic situation in the city conditions. No clutch usage unless you want to change gears.Make optimum use of the A/C. Just make sure that you donot put the AC on continuously.Keep it ON for a while turn it OFF once your car is chilled and then switch it ON in the Regulator 1 position so that engine is not loaded and can use minimal gasoline while practicing this.

Thanx a lot for the advice Pal…Knew most of the things already(you must have guessed that from the mileage I was getting!) but thanx anyway!

Hi Ankur,
Good post, even I’m contemplating a new car soon.
But i have few doubts. I have gone through the reviews in mouthshut.com. There were some negative stuffs wriiten in it.
1. The biege colour interiors are made of poor plastics.
2. The rear seat is not spacious and it accomodate only 2 adults comfortable.
3. Suspensions is not good wrt WangonR.
4. Gear shift is tight
Now i am in dilemma to chose between Estilo and WagonR.
I dont like the WagonR shape, but it seems to be spacious.
Can u plz guide me out of this ambiguity.
Thanks,

As far as you doubts are concerned let me clarify them…
1)The interiors are very good and better than Wagon R and no poor quality fabric has been used…
2)The rear seat is not as spacious as Swift but certainly at par with Wagon R and can accommodate 3 individuals comfortably.
3)Suspension is not very good but good enough.
4)Yes gear tight is a bit tight at times but that shouldn’t hamper your driving once you get a feel of it.
I too zeroed in on Zen Estilo mainly because of its better shape,better mileage,better interiors.As far as space is concerned you can go for a test drive with your family in both the cars and get a first hand experience yourself.
And yeah do tell me what you decide to buy!

18 Apr 07 at 12:29 am
Hi Ankur,
That clears my mind. But am bothered about the space. My parents and my in-laws do drop in often. Inthat case i need to accomodate 3 ppl in the rear seats who are not thin. i had test drive in estilo with 3ppl behind and it was conjusted. But i didnt try it out with wagonR. is wagonR of same width or a bigger one?
and are u sure enough about the plastics, beacasue i have read many articles on the same. When i enquired about the same with the sales guy, they too dis-agreed with me, which is expected. But am still doubtfull on the same.
what do u say???
Vardhini Ravikanth
18 Apr 07 at 12:47 am
Wagon R and Zen Estilo have almost the same space and there will not be an appreciable difference between the two..Both are small segment cars and you don’t expect them to have loads to space…So its upto you make a choice between the two..I don’t need to mention my choice between the two

Hi!
One more update! Finally I’ve purchased a new Zen Estilo (Vxi, mettalic champaign beige color- no ABS). So far. its good and whoever has taken the test ride has shown satisfaction.
Lets see how sparc fares as compared to Zen Estilo. I guess, Maruti will soon reduce Zen Estilo’s price to match Chevrolet Spark.

I am the owner of Red Estilo VXI and I can accomodate 3 people ( Lean Build offcourse) comfortably in the rear seat.
Also Plastic quality is considerably good ( better than Santro, Indica) and new Interiors are at par with Cars like Honda City.
Go Estilo !!!!

Hi ,
I too purchased estilo vxi .just wanted to ask about the working on EPS(steering),that on speed above 60 does it become hard means when speed increases the EPS is cut-off.
See this http://www.marutiudyog.com/bp/faq.asp?ch=2&ct=14&sc=1.
See this question .
What are the advantages of an Electronic Power Steering?
prikshit
25 Apr 07 at 3:59 am
You got it bit wrong…
EPS is not cut-off when speed increases but EPS doesn’t come into picture at higher speeds as you don’t need it while driving at higher speeds..EPS automatically adjusts itself to the situation…so if you take a sharp turn at high speeds EPS will come into play…

I just wanted to ask you ur experience of driving the car at high speed more than 60km,as when on high speed i was not that confident about the car and steering,at what speed max. have u taken the car,as in pune i have bad roads (bumpy ones),so it is difficult for me to drive at high speed,i was more confident when i used to drive older zen withiut power steering.

Any thoughts ??

There is a teflon paint which can be applied on the car…
It is a transparent paint which protects the car from scratches…
Costs around 4-5k..

Hi Ankur
I’m Mrs. Narayanan from Bangalore. We already have TATA Indica, used by my hubby. Now we planning to buy one for me. I’m tall and my usage of car will be 5 Kms daily. HAve a dilemma between Wagon-R and Estilo. I got answers from ur reviews for some of my doubts. But can u clear me on following issues.
1. Some says that car cannot be unlocked while driving. It has to be totally stopped to unlock it. Is it so?.
2. While going beyond 60 KMPH, this car is unstable in high ways.
3. Does it have child lock facility?
4. We have a budget of Rs.4,00,000. So which is better?.ALTO or WAGONR or ESTILO.
I like yellow color in estilo. Is that a good choice regarding the life of colors?.
Anticipating ur reply very soon bcos we r in urgent need of car.
Mrs. Narayanan
7 Jun 07 at 12:14 am
@Mrs. Narayanan
1.No it can be unlocked while driving also..
2.No way…that is totally untrue…The car is pretty stable at high speeds..
3.Yes it does have child lock facility.
4.Between Wagon R and Estilo…I think estilo has performance edge..
It also depends a lot on whose shape you like most…
Its a personal choice…
Well personally speaking I dont like yellow colours in cars at all…Red is the color I like the most in estilo…
Again personal choice…
Sorry for late reply…

dear gopal,
My house is infront of a busy road in Bangalore. Sorry to inform that i don`t see much estilo on road. The shape reminds of the old dead matiz. The leg space at back seat has not improved in estilo. The boot space has increased a bit. Not worth to purchase with hard earned money. The Wagon R sales will go up as maruti fans will stick to its brand.

Hi Ankur
After lot of survey, I have decided to buy wangon R duo as I am looking at reducing the running cost. I liked estilo the most. The only reason I am going for wagon R duo is because of the factory fitted LPG kit. Any idea if maruti is planing to fit LPG on Estilo?

Its the same good old story . . . but happening with me . . . whether to go for Estilo or Wangon R.
On Estilo :
- I personally do not like the shape of Wagon R
- Less blind spots
- There were no takers for Wagon R when it was released in the market but
now its like a hot selling cake.
- Maruti small segment cars have never failed in market.
On Wagon R :
- I understand that 20% of the people who share the same confusion are as
of now going for Estilo and the rest for Wangon R.
- More head space for back seaters.
- better resale value.

27 Aug 07 at 10:55 pm
Hi Manjunath.
Wagon R Duo is not my preference because of low running cost. The LPG costing around Rs 28 gives only 11-12 kmpl. Moreover you will have to shell out Approx Rs 40,000 more. So you have to drive around 60,000 kms before you start enjoying economy. Be sure Government subsidy for Auto LPG may not last that long and LPG will cost the same equivalent to Petrol shortly.
Moreover Engine power gets a dip as you switch over.
The rear disky space is hit.
The LPG is not on fuel injection and hence not refined.
Please as per my preference Diesel if offered might be a choice but surely not LPG!

I evaluated Zen Estilo and Wagon R and Santro.
I bet Zen Estilo is by far the winner.
As Ankur mentioned within Wagon R and Zen estilo, one can see the difference that Wagon R belongs to one geneation before in terms of style and ergonomics, and aerodynamics.
Santro is a distant third because though it appears roomier, the engine is driven by a 16bit computer but Suzuki’s are by 32 bit.( that’s like taking a call between the dead 486 and the Pentium PCs) Zen Vxi has most advanced features for the price. keyless entry, i-CATS security, all door power windows, rear dicky bottle holders, de-foggers and ofcourse ABS and Air bags.
Sure the Zen Estilo is the next gen car.
Ps: I have read that Maruti is going to change the shape of Wagon R to a new one.! in 2008 April ( around)
Has anyone heard about this.
Kumar
29 Aug 07 at 11:57 pm
i purchased estilo when it was released, and it is the most easiest vehicle i have ever driven this being important in bangalore traffic
the car gives a good mileage of about 14 in heavy traffic and 18 in long free drives
the a/c is good but is best when u r in 5 th gear in highway else in city traffic u can expect the 10% -15% reduction in speed & power…
being very faminine car my wife uses it more and is happy too.
and i switch back to my good old to Zen…

Hi there is one negative feature of Zen estilo.
The TIR Total Internal reflection happens when you drive eastwards at 8-9 AM in the morning and again at 4-5 PM when you drive westwards. This is because the black front plastic though of matt finish, reflects some light from the sun and that is seen in the front glass shield. thsi annoys as the front road view gets disturbed.
Takes time to get used to.
however this effect can be countered if you place a dark turkey towel on the plastic. This does not reflect light.
Any more views?

@All of you who have commented
I agree with most of you…you have put forward quite a lot of good points which highlight the superiority of Estilo…
Infact I too wasn’t inclined on buying Estilo as it was a new car and I had my reservations but then I took the plunge and I took a very wise decision…As Kumar said..Estilo is a generation ahead of Wagon R and Santro..
@Kumar
Frankly, i never noticed this thing…you observation power is tremendous…
I think anti-glare coating on the windshield too will solve the problem…

hi ankur,
i am planning ti buy a Zen estilo, how would it perform on LPG, is it advisable to fit a lpg gas kit ( govt approved ofcourse )to cut down the cost per km??
sudhi
16 Sep 07 at 11:17 am
Hi Sudhi
Please evaluate the options:
1 using a non factory LPG kit is not safe in MPFI cars. The latest gen cars are fuel injected, whereas LPG kits must use a carburettor. there is a technology sacrifice that is being made by using a LPG kit and using a separate metingin input to the engine. This is not a good safety feature.
2 Even you buy a costly kit,and install with factory like care , you will sacrifice on boot space,
The cost differential is a mirage. to get over the price differntial, you will have to run the car for more than 60,000 kms. Please evaluate how long it will take for you to recover the cost. Even if this happens, in the changing oil scenario, please dont be surprised if the govt raises the price for auto LPG more than it raises the petrol price. Already you know LPG is th most subsidised fuel in our country.
I strongly advise to use diesel as a fuel ( that will always be cheaper since it is used for bulk goods transport) if you dont want petrol. go for a diesel car - be happy to grab it if you dont pay extra for the car for a diesel engine. As on date Swift with diesel is approx Rs.70K more than petrol.
Other wise settle for petrol and its comfort noiseless driving.
Best of luck!

@sudhu
Mr. Kumar as put forward the true aspect of getting LPG fitted into your car…Also non factory LPG kits not only compromise on safety but are also very troublesome in winters too…
Price difference between LPG and petrol at the moment is huge so your running costs will be quite lower….you need to consult a good technician before taking the plunge..
@ashwini
I too prefer Maruti over Hyundai due to better service and low maintainance costs…
Both I think are easy to drive…You need to take into the price,shape etc to chose one..I know its a hard decision but choose wisely…

Hi Ankur,
Thanks a whole lot yaar. Your blog entry was sure a great help on deciding to go for the Estilo. I took Champagne Beige Estilo Vxi. I have updated my website with photos and a detailed review.
Rasmita, you have to do a full tank fill up and then do say a 50/100 km run. Then again fill up the tank in the same petrol bunk (possibly with the same hose) and then you can divide kms run by petrol consumed say 100 km/6 litres = 16.66 kms/litre

I don’t have any idea on that but if economy drive is what you want then you should go for dual one for sure.

Maruti provides a very good brochure when you purchase your car on how to calculate mileage and get most mileage out of your car.Also check out my previous comments or Simon Peter’s comment to know how to do it.

Noisy:Definitely no in my case.
Bumpy:didn’t get that..even a Maruti 800 will not be bumpy on smooth roads!

I am confussed over zen estilo and Swift. I am planning to buy a car. After taking test drive of Santro, i10 and estilo, I found estilo to be the best. My only concern about estilo is the back space. I feel that it is very diffcult to make three comfortably sit on the back seat.
On the other hand, I am ready to shell out more for swift, if its value for money over estilo. I primarily need a car for a couple.
Please suggest me which car should I buy.

13 Dec 07 at 4:20 pm
Hi sachin
Santro is old ad might be in for a big change in the near term.
I10 is very good car in terms of styling, space and ergonomics. But too much t pay as price.
Swift is an excellent choice given space power etc.
But please remember that Swift belogs to another class of vehicle and very wide.
Zen estilo is the best choice for its styling performance and price. - A perfect blend which cannot be atched by any car- even Wagon R or Spark!.
My piece of advise.
It is easier to maoevre a Estilo in the congested city road rather than a santro or swift.- the reason being its width.
A child along with other two adults can seat comfortably in the rear of Estilo and I feel its more than sufficient for a family car.
So go for Estilo!
Kumar

Hey Guys n Gals - Have any prediction on re-sale value of Estilo? How many Estilos are sold to date? And will Estilo sustain the market like Wagon-R/800 for years to come?
I have boiled down my choice to Estilo. Positive answers for the questions will provoke me to book one today
Chand
21 Dec 07 at 4:03 pm
@Sachin
Its your decision.If you can shell out more go for swift if it matches all your requirements. And its not difficult to fit in 3 people at back in estilo.
@Kumar
Good comparison!
@Chand
You don’t buy a car keeping its re-sale value in mind as a major preference unless you plan to sell it soon.
And there would be only very very estilos sold till date and its very hard to know its re-sale price.Also you cannot predict is re-sale price in future.
With cars coming out rather fast it might not be as big a hit as 800 or WagonR.

Hi Ankur,
I own a Zen Estilo LX. I am ok with your description of the car but the biggest problem with the car is its head lamp. Basically the intensity of the lamp is not good and focusing is also not good. The light is giving a viewing distance of only 20-25 meters. So it is really difficult to drive the car at night without street light. I have inspected the same by the service engineers and they reported this as a product defect.
Need your advice on the same.

I have been going through your feedbacks and friend’s comments.Really it is very useful, after reading all these i has decided to buy estilo and bought on 3rd Jan. All what i heard good about the machine is true, it is really a beautiful car with all moderm features packed into it. I took the VXI version . Now it is almost 3 weeks past and the vechicle is really good and mileage part i am getting around 16 in city, highways i have to check.
Once again thanks to all for your reviews to choose a better car.The color too is same as you dear .Will surely come back with my review on highway mileage.

@Sangram

Yes the headlamps have low intensity and I have got mine replaced with high intensity ones.
@Ankit
Swift is not as efficient as mileage as Estilo due to obvious reasons.You can also go got Swift diesel if you like it.
ABS stands for Anti Braking System and is helpful especially in rainy season due to low grips.If you are much concerned about saftey and have the money to spend then buy the VXi version which has it.
@Rohit
Well the dealer will not as such provide you will accessories as all the accessories with the car are provided by Maruti.Dealer will hardly give you anything as all of them sell with low profit margin.
@vijay
No even I agree that the lamps are a bit too low to be able to see properly.Using high beam is not a good idea on city roads.
@Rohit
Too hard to say on its stability,safety,comfort etc.It does seem good but only time will tell whether it will be able to survive on indian roads
@Balajee.R
Great that you found this blog useful

@aman gupta
I guess this question has been discussed in previous comments.
You decision will be based on your choice of design,mileage,budget etc.
Both the cars are good for Delhi roads.

Hi..
Please let me know what will be the result if I fix 4 speakers on the doors. Will it be good enough or I have to fix separate speakers.

@Rafeeq Manamal
The 4 speakers in door setup is cheap and good for casual listening.
If you are concerned about sound quality then you have to put speakers at the back.
The 4-door-speakers do not give good sound quality.

Hi All,
I am planning to buy a new car and after detail surveying and studying have zeroed down on Zen Estilo
Just had couple of queries.
Query 1)
Was going thru various Car reviews on the net. Came across one site,
http://www.indiacar.com/carreviews/review_all.asp
According to them following are the stats
Swift VXi
City : 12.27 Kmpl
Highways : 15.25 Kmpl
Estilo VXi
City : 12.00 Kmpl
Highways : 14.25 Kmpl
I seriously think theres some problem with the stats they have mentioned. I have never seen anyone mentioning the overall mileage of Swift more than that of Estilo (Some exceptions cud be there depending on one’s handling of the car). I have a strong doubt they must have considered Swift VXI Disel model
Can someone clarify this.
Query 2)
Tyre size for Estilo LX/LXi is 145/70 R13 and that for VXi is 155/65 R13.
What are these stats and what is the significance of this tyre size.
Query 3)
When I visited a Maruti showroom, the dealer showed me how the rear seats could be totally folded. And he mentioned that after folding the seats, 4 people could actually sit comfortably there and could enjoy a game of cards during the travel
Has anyone actually checked this ? How much comfortable and convenient it is ?
Thanks to Ankur and all for this very helpful and informative Blog. I think we should ask Maruti to provide the Print out of this blog also along with user manual for new Estilo cars
Cheers,
Ameya

Is there provision to fix speaker on the dash board? What is your suggestion to fix the music system? Howabout two speakers on dash board and two speakers with subwoofer in the trunk?

@Niraj
Estilo is definitely a better performer than Spark for obvious reasons such a better engine etc.
If budget is your priority then get a Spark else go for Estilo.
@Amey
Thank you for all the appreciation.
Don’t have much idea about Swift, so can’t comment but Swift is a better buy than Estilo any day.
Tyre size refers to the radius of the tyres, so the bigger the tyre size the better ground clearance the car will have.
Yes the rear has enough space for 4 people to sit in circle with the seat folded!
@Rafeeq Manamal
I haven’t checked out the dashboard for speaker provision but I think there should be space.If there is then your set up of dashboard+rear will be very good.

Dear all,
I am staying at indore and also planning to buy a car between 3.5 to 4.5 Lac.
i have choosen 2 options i.e. Estilo / i10 .
if have all the reviews about both and still found myself in 50-50 ration with both the options.
some body says that u can get everything in estilo within low price what u r going to get in i10.
it seems to be that both car is ok but still judgement is pending due to the decision .

@Shailesh Mahajan
Yes it is a tough choice between i10 and estilo.
Take a look at the design and pricing.
Otherwise I guess both the cars are evenly matched.
@Aman
There is also black Estilo!

You didn’t tell me whether there is provision to fix speakers on dashboard. If there is, is maruti providing speaker or we have to buy it? If we have to buy it, what should be the size?

Thank you very much Ankur for your valuable suggestions.
I am planning to book the car next week. I have also choosen Zen and i10. Maruti is offering Rs.35,000 discount on Zen in this month. I don’t have preferences on car looks. Please suggest me which will be the good option for me for both city and highway driving.

Hi,
I got the red beauty 3 days early… thats on 28th May. lxi for 3.25 l
Just want to know abt the safety features that i sud install. I liv in appartment. Yesterday itself 1 Alto was stolen infront of Flat abt 100 m away in same apartment.
My lxi has manual power door lock from company itself, gear lock from “Alert” fitted by showroom people (though i m not confident abt this gear lock). Maruti people says vehicle is equipped with iCATS (immobilizer keys).
Now please let me know what additional features sud i put

Hi Ankur,
1st of all doing gr8 job by helping people….thanks.
I hv shortlisted XETA-GLG & Estilo-LXI.
XETA-GLG:Low price, plenty of space, more power, OK interior but FE is low
Estilo-LXI: 25k more than XETA, OK space, OK interior, good FE
Based on your experience which one u suggest?

Can anyone tell me the exact procedure of starting AC. people say first start the car then start the blower and then press the AC button? Should this order be reversed while stopping the engine? People also suggest stopping the AC before restarting the car is it true?

I was 9 years old at that time I had driven a car{maruti 800} it was a horrible experience as I escaped an accident(with the cycle of a milkman}.
From then onwards I had never told my father to ride a car as at that time due to my zidd my father allowed me. & now I am planning to learn driving{on my logan}.
