Alright, I am back to the blog. There were loads of reasons due to which I could not reply to the comments or either publish new posts, but those have now been sorted out. IIT-JEE 2009 result came out a couple of days back and the deserving ones made it through to the Common Merit List and the Extended Merit List. A total of 10,035 students have made it to the Merit List who will seek admission for a total of 8295 seats in various IITs. Below is the reply to a few general queries that some of you have posted on the IIT-JEE 2009 posts. This should cover most of the queries that you have regarding the IIT JEE 2009 Counseling.

Q. I have made it to the Extended Merit List (EML), what institute can I expect?

A. EML ie. Extended Merit List is for admission to institutes like IISER, IIST, RGIPT and IIMS. But the admission to the institutes is first offered to Common Merit List students and if seats are left then EML students get a chance to grab a seat in them. IITs have issued tens of thousands of ranks in this list, but please don’t be hopeful of getting anything through it. It is just an indication of good result you can expect in your other entrance exams.

Q. Do I choose branch over college and how do I decide my branch/college preference list?

A. Coming to the topic of choosing branch over college and vice versa, it is always a tough choice to make and a very important one too. A lot of you go hunting for placement packages of various branches in various IITs and fill accordingly but that isn’t a wise thing to do. Nobody predicted 4 years back that Civil Engineers would be in high demand right now and demanding fat pay packages. It is very important to give higher preference to a branch that interests you more. Go through the syllabus of various courses, talk to seniors to get an idea on what to expect coming your way in the next 4 years. It’s no use getting stuck in Computer Science for 4 years if you hate coding programs but love working with electronic circuits, trust me. Pursuing a branch that interests you also helps if you wish to pursue higher studies in the same field. But sometimes if wiser to let the branch go if you get into a more reputable IIT than the one you getting you favorite branch in. The reputation of a IIT can help you in a lot more ways than you can imagine, so strike a balance between your interests and the reputation of IITs. You already have last year’s branch-wise cutoffs for all the IITs, which will give you a rough idea of this year’s closing ranks. And remember, its very important to fill the order of choices intelligently so that you don’t regret later if you wanted a lower choice than the one you got.

Q. I am already studying in XYZ institute, should I leave the college and take anything I get in IIT?

A. To make a choice between you current college and something that you can get in IIT counseling is always a tough choice to make especially when are studying in colleges such as BITS, IIITs etc. The best strategy as I have said earlier in my comments is to wait till the counseling and then after you are allocated a branch, analyze which of the two would be better when you look from a broader perspective. If you get into one of the older IITs with any of the top 5-7 branches then it would be definitely wiser to go in with it but leaving something such as one of the top branches in BITS Pilani is always a gamble. In short, I would give higher priority to a course in IIT rather than continuing in some other college under most circumstances. You do lose out on one year, but a large chunk of the students making it to the IITs every years are droppers.

Q. I have got a rank of 6000 and above in the Common Merit List, should I take anything I get in the IIT counseling?

A. If you have got a lower rank in the Common Merit List, don’t be disappointed. Due to seat increase, you will hopefully get something in the counseling. Though, it would be tough to choose between the newer IITs and reputed institutes such as BITS Pilani, I would suggest go for the latter. Institutes of the reputation of BITS Pilani should not be dropped in favor of the newer IITs if you getting a decent branch. Taking admission in the newer IITs is a bit of gamble but over time they are bound to improve their standards and you ultimately you do get the IIT tag that everyone craves for. Barring a few top institutes like BITS Pilani, IIITs, NIT Trichy, NIT Surathkal, going for the newer IITs is definitely a better choice.

If you have any other queries, do post in the comments and I will try to reply to as many as possible. Best of luck for the IIT JEE 2009 Counseling!

IIT JEE 2009 exam held all across India today was given by lakhs of students. There have been mixed reports from students regarding the paper while some have called it tougher and lengthier than last year paper, the others have found it easy. Maths was certainly the toughest part and everyone agrees on that.

While last year’s cutoff for general category was 180 marks (AIR 6773), this time it would almost remain same as paper was bit easier and seats are also being increased. You can check out the IIT JEE 2009 Solutions from various institutes across India. The expected cutoff for IIT JEE 2009 should be around 175. The final expected cutoff for IIT JEE 2009 is now published below. Check your expected ranks from the table below.

Total Seats this year : 8000 ( General category)

I am not touching upon the cutoff for Extended Merit List which would obviously be greater than 10,000. Please DO NOT ask what rank you can expect for given marks as the table has been published for that specific purpose only. Other queries are definitely welcome and I would try to answer as many as possible.

Opening and Closing ranks for all branches in various IITs available here. To know branch codes ” Just take the Information Brochure for IIT JEE 2009, also available here. Count from the beginning. You will get the code. For example Computer Science counts 10 and if you want it in Madras the code is M10. Thats it! ” (Taken from comment by A.Guru.Prakash(245).

The IIT-JEE 2008 paper was held today ie. on 13th April 2008. I have gone over both the paper and after analyzing them I have come to the conclusion that JEE this year was difficult than last year. The questions were trickier and hence paper was lengthier. So although cutoffs will dip this year don’t expect them to dip too much. You can check the solutions to IIT JEE 2008.

In 2007, The overall cutoff was 206 marks. The subject cutoffs were 1,2 and 4 which really don’t count much.

The branch wise opening and closing ranks for each branch in every IIT for IIT JEE 2007 can be found on IIT website. Thanks to Himanshu Gupta,my friend who helped me in finding this link

Insider info : A guy named Shitikant is scoring 456 marks in IIT JEE 2008 according to Bansal solutions and has taken coaching from Bansal Classes. So he could well be the topper of IIT JEE 2008!!

Expected IIT JEE 2008 cutoff for admission: 185-190 marks

Expected IIT JEE 2008 cutoff for last rank : About 175 marks (7200 rank)

Expected IIT JEE 2008 Extended Merit List Cutoff : 150 marks

Subject cutoffs are expected to be about at maximum of 20 marks

This is because to clear a subject cutoff you need to be in to 20% of the total marks scored by all the students in that subject. So this will lead to very low subject cutoffs and most of you will be able to clear that.

General Observations :

Maths was the toughest subject followed by physics and chemistry.

Paper 2 was harder than Paper 1.

Alright, let me first tell you previous year ie. IIT JEE 2007 ranks based on marks :

Below is the expected rank list based on marks scored in IIT JEE 2008.

Please note that this is just to give you a rough idea and the author does not take any legal responsibility for the accuracy, completeness, or usefulness of the information herein.

I do not know about the SC/ST/PD category cutoffs and I guess they are not released officially by IITs also. So I would refrain from giving you any false information.

About the OBC category, as the quota has been introduced this year itself, it is impossible to predict their ranks. But from some information I got, I think the OBC candidates need to score atleast 10% lower than the general category cutoff to be eligible for the quota. So if general cutoff is 185 marks ie. 38% of total marks then they need to score atleast 38%-(10% of 38%)=34.2% = 166 marks to be able to qualify for OBC quota. Then they would be ranked and cutoffs would be decided. Please verify this information from other sources too as I am not sure about this.

I will try to reply to as many comments as possible, but it is not possible to reply to every comment, so please bear with me.

Please vote in the poll below so that we all can get a rough idea on the average marks.

Its been a while since the IIT-JEE 2007 paper but the search for correct solutions continues…

Though most institutes have released their own IIT-JEE solutions but one major question which looms is the accuracy of the solutions. For the past few days I have been going around looking for most accurate solutions and finally I have zeroed in on the the FIITJEE and Narayana Institute solutions which seemed most accurate.

The major discussion point in this JEE 2007 paper has been the 6 mark questions which had multiple answers. These questions are the ones which have generated different answers from different institutes as the criteria for matching had not been specified in the JEE paper leaving both the students as well as the teachers perplexed. Thus the luck factor will come into play when JEE OMR sheets(answer sheets) are evaluated.

Below you can download the solutions of both Narayana and FIITJEE institutes.

The expected cutoffs for IIT-JEE 2008 will be out soon but lets have a look at how the ranks will be decided. The cutoffs are as important as how a rank is decided. The following is the ranking procedure for IIT-JEE 2008 candidates.

Only those candidates who attempt both Paper 1 and Paper 2 will be considered for the ranking.

Marks in each subject like Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry will be obtained by adding the marks secured in that subject part in both paper 1 and paper 2. i.e. Marks in Mathematics will be equal to marks in Mathematics section of Paper 1 + marks in Mathematics section of Paper 2. Similar procedure will be followed for Physics and Chemistry.

Subject-wise Cut off- All candidates whose marks are in the top 80% bracket of the total candidates appeared will qualify the cut off requirement for that subject for General/DS category. Candidates meeting the cut off requirements for all the three subjects will be considered for the ranking.

Subject-wise Cut offs for the reserved category candidates:There is some relaxation in the subject-wise cut offs available to reserved category candidates.

Based on the aggregate marks secured in the Examination, a common merit list with AIR will be prepared without any relaxed criteria. Total number of candidates declared qualified and ranked will be 1.15 times the total number of seats available at the seven IITs, IT-BHU and ISMU.

Reserved Category Merit Lists- In addition to a common merit list, separate merit lists of candidates belonging to the SC, ST, and PD categories will be prepared by giving some further relaxation in the aggregate cut off determined in 5 above. If a candidate belongs to more than one reserved category, then he/she for the purpose of ranking shall be considered in all the categories in which he/she qualifies.

Total number of candidates declared qualified in any reserved category will not exceed 1.15 times the total seats available in that category.
