Tips to crack engineering exams!
It wasn’t long ago that I had received a huge response from you people regarding my AIEEE and BITSAT posts.After the euphoria died down I received many comments from students on those posts asking for tips on how to go about cracking engineering exams.So I decided to get down to work.
I have learnt many hard lessons in my past couple of years while preparing for my entrance examinations.I would summarize the main points in list so that they are easy to remember…
- First and most important is to have confidence in yourself.Don’t lose that confidence while preparing for the entrance exams even if you are not doing well in the coaching classes.
- Having mentioned about coaching classes,I would say they play an important role in helping you crack the exam.The simple reason being continued guidance throughout the year and perpetual tests that keep you in touch with course all the time.Hence it is important to be regular in them to be able to achieve good results in the end.
- At home prepare a time table and follow it strictly.Don’t ignore it.
- Don’t get too involved with only engineering books and refer to NCERT books too.With the new IIT pattern, a lot of questions are directly made from there which you might have already seen yourself by analyzing this year’s paper.
- Don’t waste time and don’t stress yourself.Study in a balanced way and maintain a good friend circle who will guide you when you face doubts and also boost your morale.
- This one is for toppers!Don’t get complacent.Many good rankers in coaching institutes get complacent if they good marks which in is bad in the long run as they lose out to lower rankers in the end.I have seen many cases.
- To crack big papers it is very very important to be able to solve the paper completely.You might know all the questions but not been able to solve them is equivalent to not knowing them.So the golden rule is practice a lot of sample papers and in the exams not to waste time on a single question.
- Stay away from computers as much as possible! This is a major distraction from students from towns and cities as you don’t get to know how quickly time is slipping out of your hands along with straining your eyes and body which makes you dizzy and you are off to sleep!
- Choosing the right books for entrance exams is very important.Consult IITians and your teachers about them to make sure that you get your hands on the right ones and don’t waste your time in trying out new books every time.
- Last but very important point is not to get nervous while going for the exam.This will get your hands and brain move faster,quicker and better than those who are nervous!
These 10 are my golden rules which if followed strictly will definitely help you crack the paper and you will emerge out with flying colors!!
With IIT-JEE just about 6 months away, there is still time left to improve on the basics and walk through the gates of your favorite IIT by just following these 10 simple but golden rules..Best of Luck to you all!

[...] The JEE is the entrance examination to the IITs which are premier institutes for engineering in India and are rated among top colleges in the world. IITs last year changed the pattern of the paper completely. So it is very important to follow the new pattern and study accordingly. Take a look at IIT-JEE 2007 pattern. The JEE 2008 pattern is also expected to be very similar to this and make sure you check out JEE 2007 solutions to get a feel of the new pattern.Also you can check out 10 Golden tips to crack engineering entrance examinations. If you have been seriously preparing for entrance exams throughout the year then there is no need to get nervous.
By the books you have mentioned it seems you have been concentrating on AIEEE 2008,so i would suggest you also go through NCERT books along with doing a lot of sample papers as AIEEE is all about speed and accuracy.
Best of Luck!

A lot of queries!
I would say don’t get nervous,that the worst way to prepare.
Build your confidence by giving sample papers for AIEEE and evaluating yourself and studying your weak topics.
I don’t know the ISC board course but you can check out AIEEE 2008 syllabus mentioned on my AIEEE 2008 post and see what all is no covered in ISC and prepare yourself as course is not tough.
All the best for the paper!

@bhavdeep
You haven’t clarified which exam are you concentrating on.Basic trick is to keep yourself calm and keep preparing without thinking too much about the consequences.
@ravi
You have answered your question yourself!
Prepare the topics you are weak in by taking tuitions or whatever so that you can handle their questions also thus increasing your overall %.

@karan
You can start preparing for entrance exams from 12th onwards.
I would say join some coaching institute as it gives you a headstart and keeps a check on your performance also.Also you get guidance of teachers who have experience of teaching such students.And most importantly, do not waste your time, manage it efficiently.
@sumit
Get some AIEEE B.Arch book containing questions and previous year papers and solve them.Any good book shop will know the book.

mohit
15 Feb 08 at 2:58 pm
@kulbhushan rai
NCERT books are not sufficeint to crack AIEEE but they are indeed very helpful.
Previous years papers are very helpful in knowing the types you questions you can expect.
Get some good MCQ books and solve questions from it.
@Rahul
Algebra and probability are important topics that you should know.
Yes you can revise the theory once if you have sufficient time but don’t waste too much time on it.
@mohit
AIEEE syllabus keeps on changing every year so stick to current year’s syllabus and solve questions related to it only.

I AM IN 10 STD. IAM FROM COIMBATORE STUDYING IN CBSE. IAM ASPIRING FOR IIT. AS THERE IS NO GOOD INSTITUTES HERE AND ALSO BECAUSE OF THE LACK OF HARDWORK FROM MY SIDE I LAG BEHIND MANY OF MY FRIENDS IN METROS. CAN I COPE UP WITH THEM AND IIT-JEE ?
ADITYA
18 Mar 08 at 1:44 pm
@Deepankar Mishra
NCERT books are very much important not only for AIEEE but also IIT preparation.
@Ram
Plan out your syllabus over time and meet the deadlines.This way it will be easy for you to cover the entire syllabus.
@kavya
Yes it does affect your entrance preparation if you do not study in 11th.But nevertheless you can study hard in 12th and make up!
@Kuldeep
There is no minimum score as much but every year about 30,000 students are called for AIEEE central counseling if I remember correctly.The figure varies year to year.
@Aditya
There is no substitute for hard work and you need to put in your best effort.And there are hundreds of students from all over India from remote areas who qualify for IIT every year without coaching.
