IIT JEE 2008 Cutoff
The IIT-JEE 2008 paper was held today ie. on 13th April 2008. I have gone over both the paper and after analyzing them I have come to the conclusion that JEE this year was difficult than last year. The questions were trickier and hence paper was lengthier. So although cutoffs will dip this year don’t expect them to dip too much. You can check the solutions to IIT JEE 2008.
In 2007, The overall cutoff was 206 marks. The subject cutoffs were 1,2 and 4 which really don’t count much.
The branch wise opening and closing ranks for each branch in every IIT for IIT JEE 2007 can be found on IIT website. Thanks to Himanshu Gupta,my friend who helped me in finding this link 
Insider info : A guy named Shitikant is scoring 456 marks in IIT JEE 2008 according to Bansal solutions and has taken coaching from Bansal Classes. So he could well be the topper of IIT JEE 2008!!
Expected IIT JEE 2008 cutoff for admission: 185-190 marks
Expected IIT JEE 2008 cutoff for last rank : About 175 marks (7200 rank)
Expected IIT JEE 2008 Extended Merit List Cutoff : 150 marks
Subject cutoffs are expected to be about at maximum of 20 marks
This is because to clear a subject cutoff you need to be in to 20% of the total marks scored by all the students in that subject. So this will lead to very low subject cutoffs and most of you will be able to clear that.
General Observations :
- Maths was the toughest subject followed by physics and chemistry.
- Paper 2 was harder than Paper 1.
Alright, let me first tell you previous year ie. IIT JEE 2007 ranks based on marks :
Below is the expected rank list based on marks scored in IIT JEE 2008.
Please note that this is just to give you a rough idea and the author does not take any legal responsibility for the accuracy, completeness, or usefulness of the information herein.
I do not know about the SC/ST/PD category cutoffs and I guess they are not released officially by IITs also. So I would refrain from giving you any false information.
About the OBC category, as the quota has been introduced this year itself, it is impossible to predict their ranks. But from some information I got, I think the OBC candidates need to score atleast 10% lower than the general category cutoff to be eligible for the quota.So if general cutoff is 185 marks ie. 38% of total marks then they need to score atleast 38%-(10% of 38%)=34.2% = 166 marks to be able to qualify for OBC quota. Then they would be ranked and cutoffs would be decided. Please verify this information from other sources too as I am not sure about this.

I got AIR 2084 in IITJEE 2008. Will I be able to get Aerospace Engineering in any of the IIT’s?
Also can u please rank the following four in the descending order of priority?
Civil-IIT Madras
Mechanical-IIT Hyderabad
Mechanical-IIT Guwahati
Biotech-IIT Madras
Or, is it better to go to NIT- Trichy because my state rank is 121?

hi sandeep and mayank you both should go for bits pilani as your bitsat score is very good and bits pilani even is good from two iits . bits has also got its own image .

I think new IITs particularly attached with IIT mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kanpur and Kharagpur could be very good choice for those in rank position-1500-3000.
What do you think? This is particularly so because they are having only 3 major disciplines-CS/E/Chemical.

My brother got an AIR of 3299 in IIT-JEE, and according to last years stats, he can get the following
1. Civil in IIT Guwahati
2. Metallurgical in IIT Madras
3. EE in IT-BHU
4. May be Dual degree in Civil from IIT Roorkee..
Another option he has is CS from BITS, Pilani
So, can you tell which is better option considering right now he wants to do job after B.Tech.
Also, how is Civil from placement perspective ?

my AIR in IITJEE-2008 is 6351
I am an OBC candidate(OBC AIR-893)
i have referred to the counselling brouchure
and i am not sure about my chances to B.tech programmes in IIT’s
please help me for sorting out some particular branches that i can expect in any of hte IIT’s
Also my AIEEE score is 158 and my state rank is 670
in maharashtra CAN i expect mechanical branch in NIT NAGPUR

So far, my approach is:
1. going for high end (interested) branches & locations in IIT. (any way not interested in civil, etc.. in IIT).
2. if no IIT-Allotment, go for aieee counseling & join IIIT - CS (last year cut off is 1700 approx.)
(more or less equal to bits-pilani CS, for which, option is still open).
3. I am not prefering IT-BHU, (going to be IIT-BHU in an year’s time) at this juncture, (leaving it by hair-width difference in the decision making process).
IN CASE THERE IS A BETTER COURSE OF ACTION, PLEASE ADVISE. I AM STILL WAITING FOR MR. GUPTA’S COMMENTS.

I have got AIR 5086 in JEE.Got 382 in BITS Pilani and am sure to get a branch of my choice at BITS. People advise to go for IIT, whatever be the branch, even at BHU or ISMU as the brand matters. I am in dilemma. Please suggest.

I find myself in a similar situation as you. My JEE rank was 2317, BITSAT 386, and AIEEE 1365. IIT would be top priority, but branch also matters. if you can get till civil in any IIT except guwahati, i would say go for it. There is a chance you may, because the OBC candidates above you in the list would be shifted out of the main list, and so cutoffs would not be the same as last year, and also, the new IITs are also there. But pilani also is a good option. I am also in need of advice man.

I have got the rank 1250 in jee 2008.
I want to join IIT mumbai because i love that city.I live in chennai though.
1) Please tell me which course can i get in mumbai.
2) Please give a link which gives general information on all the courses…like the toughness….what is actually taught…is it good enough for the future…

Hello Junta,
Nice to see so many junta in NBD about IITJEE. I am a to be fourthie at IIT Bombay and presently outside India for internship.
I would not like to suggest any branch or anything to anyone as it is critically imp and I have little time but give some simple guidelines:
*Take ur time…talk to as many well-informed and iit friends of urs…but dont waste this time…you might hurry at the end and screw a bit
*Try to take branch in IIT as the brand value matters a lot.
*Go for your interest first
*No branches are bad or weak or watever…it all depends on your interest and commitment towards it
*From job perspective all branches are treated equally…job ranges from 6lacs to 20lacs…varies at all iits
*iit bombay and delhi are good from job perspective or entrepreneurial(starting ur company)
*iit kanpur and madras are well known for students going for higher studies…
*life has just started lot needs to be done
In case you are not selected or dont get a branch u may opt for NITs…they are nice and fantastic too…
Finally what matters is how good you are in what you do and what you can give to the world and India…
