IIT JEE 2009 Cutoff

IIT JEE 2009 exam held all across India today was given by lakhs of students. There have been mixed reports from students regarding the paper while some have called it tougher and lengthier than last year paper, the others have found it easy. Maths was certainly the toughest part and everyone agrees on that.

While last year’s cutoff for general category was 180 marks (AIR 6773), this time it would almost remain same as paper was bit easier and seats are also being increased. You can check out the IIT JEE 2009 Solutions from various institutes across India. The expected cutoff for IIT JEE 2009 should be around 175. The final expected cutoff for IIT JEE 2009 is now published below. Check your expected ranks from the table below.

Total Seats this year : 8000 ( General category)

I am not touching upon the cutoff for Extended Merit List which would obviously be greater than 10,000. Please DO NOT ask what rank you can expect for given marks as the table has been published for that specific purpose only. Other queries are definitely welcome and I would try to answer as many as possible.

Opening and Closing ranks for all branches in various IITs available here. To know branch codes ” Just take the Information Brochure for IIT JEE 2009, also available here. Count from the beginning. You will get the code. For example Computer Science counts 10 and if you want it in Madras the code is M10. Thats it! ” (Taken from comment by A.Guru.Prakash(245).

    Sorry for the late approval of comments, was really busy with some work. I will try to answer as many queries as possible that have not been answered before.

    @adam(126)
    Do not regret over what has happened, you would still hopefully get into one of the IITs. Else there are other engineering exams left, prepare for them sincerely and score well in them. Cheer up!

    @Rahul(128)
    There are hundreds of factors that affect the final cutoff, this could have some impact though. Thanks for pointing out.

    @vishal(130)
    This is the case every year. I have mentioned on the solutions post that FIITJEE/Bansal Classes and Brilliant-Tutorial solutions are known to have high levels of accuracy.

    @Sunil(131)
    Wait for the result and if in the counseling you get into top 5 IITs with a decent branch, then take the plunge, else you are in a very good position already.

    @Shruti(135)
    The paper was on the easier side. I think @Shantanu(134) has summed it up beautifully.

    @ranjodh(136)
    Considering the popularity of the branch, computer science might be tough to get, but you never know ;)

    @neha(137)
    I think you should considering Maths was the toughest of all subjects.

    @s bohra(138)
    No idea about exact seats, 8000 is an approx number mentioned in the post. The dropouts are very few and branch upgrades is all one can expect which is also not common.

    @shubham(143)
    That’s what JEE is all about, you can’t really predict the paper.

    @shyam(144)
    Check out reply to Sunil(131), same applies to you.

    @Sudhanshu(148)
    Can’t say much about the new IITs, but if I were you, I would have gone in even with the new IITs.

    @dj(149)
    Forget about JEE and start preparing hard for both the exams. You definitely can clear both of them.

    @mahendra(150)
    There are a couple of new IITs opening this year which would add 240 seats and then there would be some 18% seat increase to accommodate extra OBC students this year.

    @ashish(153)
    Sorry buddy, no idea about that one :(

    @sandeep(155)
    Somewhere in between the two I guess.

    @Dave(159)
    Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I have already said that this is the final expected cutoff according to me and it stays that way.

    @tarun(161)
    Yes, one can surely expect that.

    @N R Sreeram
    Please post AIEEE queries on AIEEE 2009 post, helps keep the comments to the topic that way. I would be making a post on AIEEE 2009 counseling after the exam and it would cover all the details, focus on the exam right now.

    @celestine(172)
    Sorry, no idea about the topper this year.

    @soumya(176)
    Only time will tell :)

    @himanshu(178) @Jeet(180)
    I will try to hunt down the matrix and post the link ASAP.

    @Neil(179)
    Really tough decision to make, I would not risk leaving established institutes just to enter new colleges having no infrastructure simply based on brand name.

    @Vishal(182)
    Yes, even I heard so, but I don’t think that the solutions have been put up on the official JEE website yet.

    @anurag(187)
    Branch takes a backseat when talking about IITs. Anyhow, getting a 2500 rank in AIEEE is definitely better than 7000 odd rank in JEE.

    @Aneek(190)
    There are lot of factors that need to considered, anyway I would advise just wait for results, cutoffs are always indicative.For second question check out reply to mahendra(150)

    @kaa(191)
    Like that is the toughest question to answer :P

    @japnik(193)
    It isn’t that the ’standard’ of IIT goes down by an easy paper. The cutoff will increase to balance that out. And as far as concepts are concerned, they are definitely tested. There might be a few easy questions that everyone would be able to answer but what you make of rest of the questions is what finally decides your rank.

    @deepak(201)
    There would be negative marking if all the correct choices have not been marked. Hard luck.

    What branch(es) can i get in the older IITs if the pattern of branch allocation was to follow the previous years trend? Will the mechanical of Indore be better than the ocean technology of Delhi. Will IIST be a better option. Please guide sir!

    Mridul Says:

    Sir

    I have got 145 as per Career Point Solutions. I want to drop a year and prepare exclusively for IIT-JEE and appear again next year and I don’t want to join a college this year thru’ AIEEE because it will prevent me from studying properly for JEE.

    However, I am expecting the following marks in CBSE boards-

    Phy – 70
    Chem – 70
    Math – 55
    Computer & English – Above 90 in both

    Will I be eligible next year if I qualify the JEE? Also, can IIT change the minimum qualifying marks in baord exams to 80% as I saw in some newspapers a few months back and if so, will they allow a one-time exception for droppers as in JEE 2006?

    udayan Says:

    hello sir,
    i think the cutoffs will go down to near about 160-165 for a rank of 7000-7500 because of a drastic pattern change in paper-2,which was unexpected.the effect of pattern change has been seen in 2006 when the cutoffs were too low although there were lesser seats.in that year one got 2 hrs separately for each subject,but here time had to be managed within 3 hrs.maths was certainly very tough acc. to me,in physics most questions were straight forward but many of them appeared to be so but they were not,in chem matching part was a bit testing,lets hope for the best.and those students who are projecting 250 as cutoff dont understand what kind of mistakes an average student does.

    niraj Says:

    well,i am a student of IIT Kgp…had got in thru jee 2008…i feel that the standard of the paper was definitely lower than last year although due to the change in pattern and the increment in the no. of seats one can expect the cutoff to remain same as last year…..as for the question of joining new IITs i certainly feel that it wud b gud to go in with the old iits as the respect and brand value that these IITs command in the industry and academia is difficult to match…..as a testimony consider this-IIT Guwahati registered a placement of only 60% of the first batch that passed out of it…..to create a brand value certainly takes time…..
