IIT JEE 2009 Cutoff

IIT JEE 2009 exam held all across India today was given by lakhs of students. There have been mixed reports from students regarding the paper while some have called it tougher and lengthier than last year paper, the others have found it easy. Maths was certainly the toughest part and everyone agrees on that.

While last year’s cutoff for general category was 180 marks (AIR 6773), this time it would almost remain same as paper was bit easier and seats are also being increased. You can check out the IIT JEE 2009 Solutions from various institutes across India. The expected cutoff for IIT JEE 2009 should be around 175. The final expected cutoff for IIT JEE 2009 is now published below. Check your expected ranks from the table below.

Total Seats this year : 8000 ( General category)

I am not touching upon the cutoff for Extended Merit List which would obviously be greater than 10,000. Please DO NOT ask what rank you can expect for given marks as the table has been published for that specific purpose only. Other queries are definitely welcome and I would try to answer as many as possible.

Opening and Closing ranks for all branches in various IITs available here. To know branch codes ” Just take the Information Brochure for IIT JEE 2009, also available here. Count from the beginning. You will get the code. For example Computer Science counts 10 and if you want it in Madras the code is M10. Thats it! ” (Taken from comment by A.Guru.Prakash(245).

    As compared to last year paper question was a bit difficult, but the main problem was the marking scheme and the integer type question.
    Change was obvious and was much needed.
    I WOULD LIKE TO ASK ABOUT THE PRESENT CUTOFF OF MECHANICAL IN IIT DELHI,GUWAHATI AND KHARAGHPUR?
    CAN I MAKE IT THRU RANK BETWEEN 1500-3000.

    Chinmay Deshpande Says:

    Ankur,

    A negligible no. of the IITians I know have a job somewhat related to their course in iit.

    So I am assuming, for most courses, you are not really job-ready and must study atleast 1 level higher to get a job relevant to what you learned.

    Am I also right in assuming that some ‘low’ courses which students will not opt for unless their rank is bad – these courses are the ones for which there is high demand in the industry.
    And anyway, I think that if your gpa is good, you can get a job that a guy in comp science would get if he has no plans to study further in the field and go into management.

    My crux is- branch doesn’t matter if you don’t want to study further in the same field.

    NOW for my question- with a score of 200, and expected rank of 4000, can I get marine eng. in Madras and not regret opting for it or should I drop a year.

    Sorry for the lenght :)

    @Anurag(206)
    The link to branch wise opening and closing ranks for JEE 2008 has been added to the post.I would definitely go in with established IITs rather than the new IITs irrespective of the branch. IIST has a bond that you need to sign and it also depends whether you are interested in research field or not.

    @Rahul(207)
    No, admission to IITs is restricted to common merit list. Through EML, admission to institutes like IIST, IISER is done. For complete info visit this link : http://www.jee.iitb.ac.in/extended.htm

    @Nithin(212)
    I will dig deeper to get that info for anyone interested.

    @san(213)
    Depends on what you get in IIT counseling. Would be a very tough call to make anyhow. Best of luck :)

    @Mridul(214)
    Yes, you would definitely be eligible. Nothing can be said about rules, but logically speaking they should allow a one-time exception if such a thing happens.

    @ms1991(215)
    Upgrading branch is possible after admission through academic performance, but it is VERY VERY tough and only VERY few people manage to do so, so don’t even factor that in while taking admission in a particular branch.

    @Anurag(217)
    Definitely one of the established IITs.

    @udayan(218)
    The last line made be burst out laughing !! :) )

    @Anthony(220)
    No idea dude, been out of touch for couple of years now ;)

    @ranjodh(221)
    Its always better to wait for the results.

    @aman
    Don’t count your chickens before they are hatched!

    @vinod(223)
    Is that even possible?

    @Kranz(230)
    I would go with the lower IITs than the new ones for sure. I have been saying this all along but remember, four years down the line, the newer IITs could become much better, but at the moment there is an element of risk while choosing them.

    @smb(231)
    One cannot predict what the job scenario will be after 4 years, if possible choose branch according to your interest, that is the best way to beat recession :D

    @jm(232)
    The latter.

    @mahendra(233)
    NIT Surathkal is definitely among the top engineering institutes in India, but if you get something decent in IIT Madras, you should definitely consider shifting.

    @Vishal(235) prabha(236) Krishan(238) Anupam(240)
    Higher number of students has very less impact on cutoffs. Subject cutoff as I have said before would not be too high or too low, difficult to put a number to it.

    @Tirthankar(241)
    Study as hard as you can without losing hope, I am sure you will get through.

    @kislyaravi(242)
    Branch cutoffs are almost impossible to predict for current year. Get a rough idea from last year branch wise cutoffs from the link mentioned in the post.

    @sandesh(243)
    Too many questions at a single time, just hang out there a bit more and wait for results to know what he can expect in IITs. Its always a trade off between lower IITs and say BITS Pilani, IIITs, NIT Trichy etc. That decision should be made only after having all counseling procedures have completed. This is just the initial stage.

    @kg(243)
    Well seats are being increased this year for OBC category, so this should definitely help your cause.You should get a course surely in one of the top IITs.

    @A.Guru(245)
    Yes, decoding is pretty simple, thanks for pointing out. Be prepared to slug out at IIT, no matter what course you choose, getting into IIT is just the beginning. After all it is worth all the effort you put in.
