IIT JEE 2009 Cutoff
IIT JEE 2009 exam held all across India today was given by lakhs of students. There have been mixed reports from students regarding the paper while some have called it tougher and lengthier than last year paper, the others have found it easy. Maths was certainly the toughest part and everyone agrees on that.
While last year’s cutoff for general category was 180 marks (AIR 6773), this time it would almost remain same as paper was bit easier and seats are also being increased. You can check out the IIT JEE 2009 Solutions from various institutes across India. The expected cutoff for IIT JEE 2009 should be around 175. The final expected cutoff for IIT JEE 2009 is now published below. Check your expected ranks from the table below.

Total Seats this year : 8000 ( General category)
I am not touching upon the cutoff for Extended Merit List which would obviously be greater than 10,000. Please DO NOT ask what rank you can expect for given marks as the table has been published for that specific purpose only. Other queries are definitely welcome and I would try to answer as many as possible.
Opening and Closing ranks for all branches in various IITs available here. To know branch codes ” Just take the Information Brochure for IIT JEE 2009, also available here. Count from the beginning. You will get the code. For example Computer Science counts 10 and if you want it in Madras the code is M10. Thats it! ” (Taken from comment by A.Guru.Prakash(245).

the subjective part made the paper very tough as it demanded high accuracy. physics was easy and chemistry also. maths was bit tricky. i think cutoff will dip this year as paper was tough as compared to last year.

What do u think will be the marks to get a rank of 2000?

12 Apr 09 at 8:11 pm
I think the paper was badly made. It would help those who keep solving tough sums before getting basics clear. 2007’s paper was the best. It was slightly easier, but it required much more logic.
Maths was awful. Compare this year’s coordinate with last years!

acc to me cuttoff marks may fall down this year
bcz to bassically two reasons:
1.the first is that the paper was toughest as compared to last year especially maths
2.and second reason is that the colleges of iit has been increased this year.(seats are also increased)
but the cutt off should fall down this year.

paper 2 was easy…..
paper 1 was solely targeting the students of class xii,
coz some ques hv been picked up directly frm ncert txtbook…
iit will definitely be able to decrease d selection of droppers to a large extent….
also d paper targeted xii students who prepare honestly for boards….
acc 2 me cutoff 4 gen category should be 160-170…

Yeah, i think same here….
the first paper was easy especially physics, while second one contained subjectives which made it difficult….
i guess cutoffs wud dip this year….

accordin to me, paper was average bt tricky, some questions were of 10+2 level, as usual maths was the most difficult of the three, chemistry was quite scoring and simple questions were asked. cutoffs will surely go high…

12 Apr 09 at 9:15 pm
I think overall level of JEE 09 was higher- basically because of a drastic change in pattern.. as subjectives & more than one option correct questions both had -ve marking..
For me, physics was easiest (overall- paper 2 being a bit tricky).. then chem & toughest was maths.

12 Apr 09 at 9:29 pm
i think the cut off will remain the same for general category as the second paper was a bit tougher although the first was bit easier. then you also have to take into account that there was negative marking in multiple answer questions. also the subjective questions had their own role to play. but considering the fact that that the number of seats have increased, i think the cut off would vary between 165 to 175.

I am a student of iitkgp and was a candidate in jee2008.Not to discourage this year’s hopefuls but i have a feeling that the cut off for this year is going to rise slightly.It should be around 185 for a rank of 7500 and 200 for a rank of 500,210 for a rank of 4000 and so on..

Ashwin Shah
12 Apr 09 at 9:53 pm
Well starting with the chemistry paper it was clear that the paper was not that hard as it was last year but it was really tricky and specially the new scheme marking that implies even negative mark to more than one correct and subjective question was a great surprise and a little bit advantageous as it would rule out those people who do guess work but some deserving students will also get hampered.
Maths was no doubt tough and more so it was lookin as though it has been made form a particular section specially conics(the locus part) and truly the paper was bad as it was just made to improve the last year image of IIT.
Physics was neither easy as the match the following part was really tough and highly tricky it demanded a lot from a child which would render one insufficient for the second paper.
More so it was just made to make an image of IIT like the earlier times of PRE and MAINS the cutoffs in chemistry will be high in maths also a fair amount and a good deal for physics i think this is the worst part of this years paper apart from it being of a high standard.

hey…
i am a student of iit roorkee
had a gud look of this years jee
nd acc to me the maths was easier than last year’s
but overall it was a tricky paper..
indeed looked like an iitjee paper nd was really intelligently set..
m sure that the highest marks will increase for sure..
due to some sections being str forward as compared to that of 07…
but still the cut off may be around 175-185
jus a suggestion to others that there are very little chances of answers gettin completely matched so one can predict an error of (+-)20-25 marks…
so jus chill for now..
coz i have gone thru all this last year
rather enjoy this tym…
neways all the rockin best to all of u!!

oh c’mon man the cutoff cant possibly be 175 .
It should fall down a little more ie about 160-165.
jee 2008 paper was much more easy.
In 2009 much tougher ,
firstly the pattern was such that losing marks was very easy
there was -ve marking everywhere,more questions with multiple tricks involved
also paper 2 was damn hard .

Hi Ankur, Good job year on year.
Please note that this time, FIITJEE has given rank predictor on their home page. The compiled Ranks and Marks table as per FIITJEE site is given below.
Rank Range (Marks Range)
1 – 20 (+++ … 380)
21 – 100 (379 … 330)
101 – 200 (329 … 310)
201 – 500 (309 … 290)
501 – 1500 (289 … 250)
1501 – 3500 (249 … 215)
3501 – 6000 (214 … 190)
6001 – 8500 (190 … 168)
Hence, the cut-off looks like 168.
Considering the experience of FIITJEE and the amount of data they have, the figures look more trustworthy.

This year IITJEE (Both papers) were set keeping in mind the stress level of the genuine aspirants. One cannot say that the concepts were unknown. The papers were so designed that one who is thorough with the results of various theories can progress rapidly. There was a lot of confusion among most of the students as they took too much time in arriving at the conclusions, thereby making the volume of attempt less than the risk level.

Some general replies first. Reserved category people, please check out the link I have mentioned in the post for last year cutoffs to get an idea as this year there should not be much of a difference.
Subject cutoffs are impossible to predict, hopefully they would not be significant, unless you are scoring too low in a subject.
@Abhishek(53)
Marking Matrix is mentioned in both the analysis of Career Launcher and TIME, check out the links in the post.

Branch can be seen from last year matrix published on JEE site after checking your expected rank from the cutoff table. However, you can never be sure of the branch till you actually get it!
@pkc(66) Shreyansh(74)
Thank you for your invaluable analysis of the paper.
@aniket(102)
EML cutoff is difficult to predict as mentioned in the post. Hopefully you should make it to EML.
@preety(112)
Pattern change will have its consequences but not too much.
@sanjay(117)
There are loads of entrance exams still remaining, perform well in them and try to get in to a good institute. Do not think about dropping at this moment at all.
@Arjun(119)
Nice work there! Should certainly help the students.
@harsh(121)
Decide about leaving or joining only after you have secured a seat in IIT. If you get into one of the top 5 IITs, then you should consider leaving NIT Warangal.
@Anupam(122)
Some in-depth analysis there, really appreciated!

I studied so hard for the exam. i used to 250+ marks in time mocks, 300 + marks in brilliant mocks. But somehow in the last week, i got real tensed, as i am a repeater, and i started losing confidence. In the iit exam i started skipping questions to finish the whole paper without giving my full attention to a question. In the end i was only only able to mark 30 questions nearly in both the papers. I just got 174 marks. I am feeling real bad now. All my efforts had gone wasted in a single day. Now what should i do? I am obc, what can i expect with my marks? please reply.

13 Apr 09 at 1:49 pm
Ankur, one very very important point that everyone is neglecting is that last year’s general category ranks included OBC candidates also, but this year totally separate lists will be prepared.
For example my friend had got 3500 rank in GC, but he got metallurgy roorkee which had closed at 2900 in 2007. That means there were about 500 OBC candidates b/w rank 1 and rank 3500.

I’m presently at NIT Durgapur – CSE branch.
My IIT score according to Bansal solutions came out to be 201.
I’m expecting a rank around 4700 – 5200.
Can you please tell me what streams will I get?
And, should I take up anything at all!
Thanks.

The paper, as far as the questions go, was as tough as the 2008 paper. However, keeping in mind the [very] strict marking scheme this time, I feel the cutoff [for 7000th rank] will come down to 170-175, which is of course, only a marginal decrease from last year’s cutoff of 180. I do not think the topper will get more than 410 this time. The paper, as far as the intellectual content goes, was superior to both 2007 and 2008, which means that it’ll ensure a better filter for IITs.

How do you think was the difficulty level of the IIT JEE 2009 papers ?
Was introducing negative marking in multiple Choice Questions a correct step ?
What should have an average student scored in this examination this time ?

Your analysis is complete crap.. There is no way, the cutoff will touch 175. The paper was much toughter.
VMC predicts cutoff at 168. And they were 99% accurate last time. So you should reconsider your cutoff, and dont dismay students by this crap.

i personally think the paper WAS TOUGHER than last year….not necessarily the level of questions but THE PATTERN…there was negative in all sections except in column solving which too did not have single options as answers…so you could say that the non negative MCQs which had +4 n -0 were done away with replaced by the match the columns which pretty much were 4 non nega. MCQs having +2 n -0 crammed into 1 question there by making things tougher…
im getting around 188….think il get BTECH???

14 Apr 09 at 5:57 pm
Why do you think the rank list will go down this year?? The increased negative marking in Multianswer and in subjective should decrease the marks for corresponding ranks last year. And , Subjective are a lot tougher to handle than objective, coz no tricks are applicable there. Last year 248 got 1500 and you are predicting 2000. Ithink it will be opposite. Please do reply. And yes, do you think the no. of seats in each stream will go up in all institutes or is it that no of seats is increased only because of new IITs??

This year papper was very easy, it was little lengthy but most questions were trivial.
Standard of JEE has gone down.
It was not upto my expectation
aim of jee should be to test undrstanding of concepts and ability to apply them.By asking common ques it has become sumthing which tests how many ques have u done before attending exam.

Sorry for the late approval of comments, was really busy with some work. I will try to answer as many queries as possible that have not been answered before.
@adam(126)
Do not regret over what has happened, you would still hopefully get into one of the IITs. Else there are other engineering exams left, prepare for them sincerely and score well in them. Cheer up!
@Rahul(128)
There are hundreds of factors that affect the final cutoff, this could have some impact though. Thanks for pointing out.
@vishal(130)
This is the case every year. I have mentioned on the solutions post that FIITJEE/Bansal Classes and Brilliant-Tutorial solutions are known to have high levels of accuracy.
@Sunil(131)
Wait for the result and if in the counseling you get into top 5 IITs with a decent branch, then take the plunge, else you are in a very good position already.
@Shruti(135)
The paper was on the easier side. I think @Shantanu(134) has summed it up beautifully.
@ranjodh(136)
Considering the popularity of the branch, computer science might be tough to get, but you never know
@neha(137)
I think you should considering Maths was the toughest of all subjects.
@s bohra(138)
No idea about exact seats, 8000 is an approx number mentioned in the post. The dropouts are very few and branch upgrades is all one can expect which is also not common.
@shubham(143)
That’s what JEE is all about, you can’t really predict the paper.
@shyam(144)
Check out reply to Sunil(131), same applies to you.
@Sudhanshu(148)
Can’t say much about the new IITs, but if I were you, I would have gone in even with the new IITs.
@dj(149)
Forget about JEE and start preparing hard for both the exams. You definitely can clear both of them.
@mahendra(150)
There are a couple of new IITs opening this year which would add 240 seats and then there would be some 18% seat increase to accommodate extra OBC students this year.
@ashish(153)
Sorry buddy, no idea about that one
@sandeep(155)
Somewhere in between the two I guess.
@Dave(159)
Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I have already said that this is the final expected cutoff according to me and it stays that way.
@tarun(161)
Yes, one can surely expect that.
@N R Sreeram
Please post AIEEE queries on AIEEE 2009 post, helps keep the comments to the topic that way. I would be making a post on AIEEE 2009 counseling after the exam and it would cover all the details, focus on the exam right now.
@celestine(172)
Sorry, no idea about the topper this year.
@soumya(176)
Only time will tell
@himanshu(178) @Jeet(180)
I will try to hunt down the matrix and post the link ASAP.
@Neil(179)
Really tough decision to make, I would not risk leaving established institutes just to enter new colleges having no infrastructure simply based on brand name.
@Vishal(182)
Yes, even I heard so, but I don’t think that the solutions have been put up on the official JEE website yet.
@anurag(187)
Branch takes a backseat when talking about IITs. Anyhow, getting a 2500 rank in AIEEE is definitely better than 7000 odd rank in JEE.
@Aneek(190)
There are lot of factors that need to considered, anyway I would advise just wait for results, cutoffs are always indicative.For second question check out reply to mahendra(150)
@kaa(191)
Like that is the toughest question to answer
@japnik(193)
It isn’t that the ’standard’ of IIT goes down by an easy paper. The cutoff will increase to balance that out. And as far as concepts are concerned, they are definitely tested. There might be a few easy questions that everyone would be able to answer but what you make of rest of the questions is what finally decides your rank.
@deepak(201)
There would be negative marking if all the correct choices have not been marked. Hard luck.

Sir
I have got 145 as per Career Point Solutions. I want to drop a year and prepare exclusively for IIT-JEE and appear again next year and I don’t want to join a college this year thru’ AIEEE because it will prevent me from studying properly for JEE.
However, I am expecting the following marks in CBSE boards-
Phy – 70
Chem – 70
Math – 55
Computer & English – Above 90 in both
Will I be eligible next year if I qualify the JEE? Also, can IIT change the minimum qualifying marks in baord exams to 80% as I saw in some newspapers a few months back and if so, will they allow a one-time exception for droppers as in JEE 2006?

15 Apr 09 at 4:09 pm
hello sir,
i think the cutoffs will go down to near about 160-165 for a rank of 7000-7500 because of a drastic pattern change in paper-2,which was unexpected.the effect of pattern change has been seen in 2006 when the cutoffs were too low although there were lesser seats.in that year one got 2 hrs separately for each subject,but here time had to be managed within 3 hrs.maths was certainly very tough acc. to me,in physics most questions were straight forward but many of them appeared to be so but they were not,in chem matching part was a bit testing,lets hope for the best.and those students who are projecting 250 as cutoff dont understand what kind of mistakes an average student does.
udayan
15 Apr 09 at 4:11 pm
well,i am a student of IIT Kgp…had got in thru jee 2008…i feel that the standard of the paper was definitely lower than last year although due to the change in pattern and the increment in the no. of seats one can expect the cutoff to remain same as last year…..as for the question of joining new IITs i certainly feel that it wud b gud to go in with the old iits as the respect and brand value that these IITs command in the industry and academia is difficult to match…..as a testimony consider this-IIT Guwahati registered a placement of only 60% of the first batch that passed out of it…..to create a brand value certainly takes time…..

Have you ever worked out a similar analysis for the trend in IIT and branch selections??

I am getting a total of 235 (FIITJEE solutions). I have performed poorly in Chemistry, scoring just 35. Will I be able to clear the MQMR in Chemistry? According to a TOI report, last year’s MQMR in Chemistry would have been 19. Considering that approx 60k more students appeared this year…should I be worried? Plz do reply sir….I meant should I be worried about clearing the cut off? Also, all Chemistry champions from my batch have given an average performance- the highest being 72. All of them found the Chemistry part tough. But the comments here tell a different story, it seems.

As compared to last year paper question was a bit difficult, but the main problem was the marking scheme and the integer type question.
Change was obvious and was much needed.

My brother has given IIT this year and he is hoping to get around 180-190 marks.So,what are his chances of getting the IIT?Which college should he get?can he get a good branch like CS,EC,IT in any of the IITs?Are ISM and IT-BHU are not good as compared to rest of the IITS???…..If one gets very good rank in AIEEE and a lower rank in IIT,so which colleges(IIT or NIT) one should prefer…..means whether to take a good NIT or a ISM\IT-BHU.PLS help me out…..Is NIT placements and teachings are comparable to IITs?

Hai guys! I am also an IIT JEE 2009 candidate.
DECODING THE COURSE CODES is very simple!
Just take the Information Brochure for IIT JEE 2009. Count from the beginning. You will get the code.For example Computer Science counts 10 and if you want it in Madras the code is M10.Thats it!
And sir, I am getting 274 in JEE.I am an OBC(NCL) candidate. I have absolutely no idea about any courses. I want to get any M.Tech DD.Please say few ideas about the courses I could choose concerning about less work burden in IIT but a good salary.

Ankur,
A negligible no. of the IITians I know have a job somewhat related to their course in iit.
So I am assuming, for most courses, you are not really job-ready and must study atleast 1 level higher to get a job relevant to what you learned.
Am I also right in assuming that some ‘low’ courses which students will not opt for unless their rank is bad – these courses are the ones for which there is high demand in the industry.
And anyway, I think that if your gpa is good, you can get a job that a guy in comp science would get if he has no plans to study further in the field and go into management.
My crux is- branch doesn’t matter if you don’t want to study further in the same field.
NOW for my question- with a score of 200, and expected rank of 4000, can I get marine eng. in Madras and not regret opting for it or should I drop a year.
Sorry for the lenght

16 Apr 09 at 10:18 pm
@Anurag(206)
The link to branch wise opening and closing ranks for JEE 2008 has been added to the post.I would definitely go in with established IITs rather than the new IITs irrespective of the branch. IIST has a bond that you need to sign and it also depends whether you are interested in research field or not.
@Rahul(207)
No, admission to IITs is restricted to common merit list. Through EML, admission to institutes like IIST, IISER is done. For complete info visit this link : http://www.jee.iitb.ac.in/extended.htm
@Nithin(212)
I will dig deeper to get that info for anyone interested.
@san(213)
Depends on what you get in IIT counseling. Would be a very tough call to make anyhow. Best of luck
@Mridul(214)
Yes, you would definitely be eligible. Nothing can be said about rules, but logically speaking they should allow a one-time exception if such a thing happens.
@ms1991(215)
Upgrading branch is possible after admission through academic performance, but it is VERY VERY tough and only VERY few people manage to do so, so don’t even factor that in while taking admission in a particular branch.
@Anurag(217)
Definitely one of the established IITs.
@udayan(218)
)
The last line made be burst out laughing !!
@Anthony(220)
No idea dude, been out of touch for couple of years now
@ranjodh(221)
Its always better to wait for the results.
@aman
Don’t count your chickens before they are hatched!
@vinod(223)
Is that even possible?
@Kranz(230)
I would go with the lower IITs than the new ones for sure. I have been saying this all along but remember, four years down the line, the newer IITs could become much better, but at the moment there is an element of risk while choosing them.
@smb(231)
One cannot predict what the job scenario will be after 4 years, if possible choose branch according to your interest, that is the best way to beat recession
@jm(232)
The latter.
@mahendra(233)
NIT Surathkal is definitely among the top engineering institutes in India, but if you get something decent in IIT Madras, you should definitely consider shifting.
@Vishal(235) prabha(236) Krishan(238) Anupam(240)
Higher number of students has very less impact on cutoffs. Subject cutoff as I have said before would not be too high or too low, difficult to put a number to it.
@Tirthankar(241)
Study as hard as you can without losing hope, I am sure you will get through.
@kislyaravi(242)
Branch cutoffs are almost impossible to predict for current year. Get a rough idea from last year branch wise cutoffs from the link mentioned in the post.
@sandesh(243)
Too many questions at a single time, just hang out there a bit more and wait for results to know what he can expect in IITs. Its always a trade off between lower IITs and say BITS Pilani, IIITs, NIT Trichy etc. That decision should be made only after having all counseling procedures have completed. This is just the initial stage.
@kg(243)
Well seats are being increased this year for OBC category, so this should definitely help your cause.You should get a course surely in one of the top IITs.
@A.Guru(245)
Yes, decoding is pretty simple, thanks for pointing out. Be prepared to slug out at IIT, no matter what course you choose, getting into IIT is just the beginning. After all it is worth all the effort you put in.
