IIT-JEE Ranking Procedure

New : Check out IIT-JEE 2008 Solutions and IIT JEE 2008 Cutoff

The expected cutoffs for IIT-JEE 2008 will be out soon but lets have a look at how the ranks will be decided. The cutoffs are as important as how a rank is decided. The following is the ranking procedure for IIT-JEE 2008 candidates.

Only those candidates who attempt both Paper 1 and Paper 2 will be considered for the ranking.

  1. Marks in each subject like Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry will be obtained by adding the marks secured in that subject part in both paper 1 and paper 2. i.e. Marks in Mathematics will be equal to marks in Mathematics section of Paper 1 + marks in Mathematics section of Paper 2. Similar procedure will be followed for Physics and Chemistry.
  2. Subject-wise Cut off- All candidates whose marks are in the top 80% bracket of the total candidates appeared will qualify the cut off requirement for that subject for General/DS category. Candidates meeting the cut off requirements for all the three subjects will be considered for the ranking.
  3. Subject-wise Cut offs for the reserved category candidates:There is some relaxation in the subject-wise cut offs available to reserved category candidates.
  4. Based on the aggregate marks secured in the Examination, a common merit list with AIR will be prepared without any relaxed criteria. Total number of candidates declared qualified and ranked will be 1.15 times the total number of seats available at the seven IITs, IT-BHU and ISMU.
  5. Reserved Category Merit Lists- In addition to a common merit list, separate merit lists of candidates belonging to the SC, ST, and PD categories will be prepared by giving some further relaxation in the aggregate cut off determined in 5 above. If a candidate belongs to more than one reserved category, then he/she for the purpose of ranking shall be considered in all the categories in which he/she qualifies.
  6. Total number of candidates declared qualified in any reserved category will not exceed 1.15 times the total seats available in that category.

    Ankur Gupta Says:

    To be able to qualify in IIT-JEE you need to have minimum marks in every subject and then only your overall marks are seen if they are above cut-off or not…
    So there is a cut-off for every subject which you need to have to be able to get through along with having total marks greater than overall cut-off..
    I hope that makes it clear..

    @Mukund
    It seems as much confusing to me as it is to you.
    Thats IIT for you :p
    But even if you got to know the exact meaning, it won’t help you pass the subject cut-off would it.So its better to prepare rather than go digging for information.Just my personal opinion though.
    @Jyoti Maheshwari
    I can not make a thing out of these 1,4,3 numbers that you posted.Would be great if you could elaborate. Basically cutoffs are decided according to level of difficulty of subject and performance of candidates appearing for the exams.The exact criteria has been mentioned by Mukund in the comment above yours.Go through it and see if you can make anything out of it!

    @ankit gundecha
    You can ask look at some of the coaching institutes in your neighborhood area and then research around by asking people which one is the best one.
    He will appear for IIT the same year he sits for his board exams. IIT exam is held less than a month after the board exams.
    @varun
    If he is decent in studies then he can make it to IITs.
    And yes a SC candidate’s probability is definitely much higher than a General student, this is a well known fact.
    @DSouvik
    Without having seen the paper how can this be predicted?
    If the paper comes out real tough then it will be completely different scenario as what happened last year.
