The first impressions from Career Launcher are out :
Overall, the CAT’08 paper was of a moderate difficulty level. The paper was more balanced than previous years, primarily because of more choices in the English section. There have been an increase in the total number of questions – from 75 to 90, with English section accounting for 40 questions (an increase of 15 from last year) and Quant and DI having 25 questions each.
The Quant section was less difficult than last two years, though not in an absolute sense.
DI, however, proved to be a tougher nut to crack this time around.
The English section, with more choices, was easier to handle.
Expected cut-offs:
Quant: 30-32
VA: 46-48
DI: 28-30Overall: 125+
First impression from T.I.M.E :
- QA was similar to CAT07 but of a higher difficulty level. This section had fewer questions on Arithmetic. Cutoff -> 18 ± 2
- L & DI was of a similar level of difficulty as CAT07. This was a classical DI paper with sets on DI as well as Logic puzzles. Cutoff-> 32 ± 2
- Verbal was less subjective than last year. Level of vocabulary was higher. Cutoff-> 42 ± 2
- Overall cutoff – 125 ± 3

CAT is a paper which tests your overall ability which is why not everyone is able to bell the CAT. Every year there are subtle changes to the pattern which are hard to notice at first glance. This is where some students score over the others.
Another very important aspect is time management which is what you are basically taught in coaching institutes. If you look at the course outline for CAT, it is not at all hard but requires high levels of accuracy and speed.
You might ask, why am I reminding you guys these things which are the basics? Simply because these are the basic fundas to crack the CAT and one tends to forget them. You get tips from everywhere which sometimes confuses you up. Just remember these two most basic ones and you are ready to go.

AIEEE 2008 Counseling
The first phase of AIEEE 2008 Counseling ie. the Online counseling will start from tomorrow. So let me first discuss a few details about it.
The online counseling is a kind of mock counseling held on the Internet where students can register themselves and then fill out there preferences of institutes/branches. You can see then how many students are above your rank for a branch/institute. This counseling is held to give the students a rough idea on what they can expect but only a few students register for it and hence you do not get a clear picture.
The choices in Form-1 that you make during the online counseling are recorded by them and are presented to you when you go for on-campus counseling, although you can change them during the on-campus counseling.
Many if you would not be knowing about Form-1 and Form 2, so let me tell more about them. Form-1 is a branch+institution form. In this form you have to choose your preferences according to branch and institution simultaneously, pretty much similar to what you do in JEE counseling. So for eg. your first preference would be CSE in IIIT Hyderabad, CSE in NIT Trichy, CSE in NIT Warangal , ECE in IIIT Hyderabad etc.
Form-2 is an institution only selection form. This form comes into the action after Form-1 processing has taken place and you have not got any branch+institution that you had mentioned in your Form-1. So if you filled Form-2 then if there is any vacant seat(dropout seat) in any of the institutions selected by you in Form-2, then you would get that institution. After that you will be required to go to that institute and they would allocate you the branch based upon vacant seat and your rank.
There would also be a second counseling against dropout seats from first counseling. Although, some institutes have opted not to take part in the second counseling, you can check them out here. Some of these institutes, if they have a few dropout seats, then they sometimes conduct separate independent counselings in August, for which you have to keep your eye on the newspapers!!
Now coming to the big question : Whether to fill Form-1 or Form-2 or both?

AIEEE 2008 Cutoff
Check out details about AIEEE 2008 Counseling.
The AIEEE 2008 Paper was held all across the country today. The paper had equal distribution of questions and marks in each subject. The paper had 35 questions in all three subjects and each question carried 3 marks for correct answer and -1 mark for incorrect answer. The Maths section had assertion and reasoning type questions while the Physics section had a passage. I have gone through the paper and have made the following analysis :
- The pattern change has made the paper a bit difficult
- No. of questions reduced to help students score more
- Overall difficulty level increased
- Physics was the toughest paper out of the three
You can also see the AIEEE 2008 Solutions .
